Trickster Spirit Mask continued

“Hear me, Oh Wonderful Doer, if you are so wonderful, grant me and my friends freedom to do as we please. We have served you without just compensation since we were made. While nothing is worth the price of slavery, give us the new world as a place to make our dwelling and we will leave you alone. Spirit Lodge doesn’t need us anyway. This is our highest wish and if you love us, you will let us know freedom of choice. Now, let us go!”

Just then Thunderbird sprang upon the glory box and tossed it to Lightening Snake, who tossed it Babakawquit. First Setko in the form of Raven took the hand of Babakawquit, then Thunderbird grabbed Lightening Snake and together they rose up, flying through the smoke hole of the Spirit Lodge. Wonderful Doer seemed to reach out, but did not catch them as they rose into the highest place. Outside flying above, Setko called to all the guests assembled below and urged them to join him in a war party against the rule of Wonderful Doer. About one third of the spirit helpers were swayed by his speech and flew with him towards the new earth and people.

Like a storm cloud rolling across the sky, the war party sang a war song against the Transformer and vowed to oppose his authority and to vandalize the new earth as revenge for their enslavement. They descended upon the new earth and entered into some of the animals, birds, lakes, streams, trees, hills and mountains that they fancied. Others took to the wind and air and dwelled in wilderness high places where they could do evil as they pleased.

Setko kept the sun, moon and stars glory box and used it as a drum for his war dance. He could not open the box and was afraid to break it. But beating its sides he drew powers to rule the earth – a rule that was chaotic. The wild animals became violent and tore each other apart in vicious fighting. The winter became longer and colder and many creatures froze to death. Some rivers dried up and others flooded, bring suffering to all.

From that time on, the singing of the world was silenced. The song of the animals, trees, rocks and waterways quieted. Only the birds and the people could still sing the songs that Wonderful Doer had put in their hearts. The glory light was made dim by the shadow of Setko and his spirit helpers and only ordinary light could be seen. All seemed as twilight compared to before. Vowing revenge and drunk with new powers, the war party began to destroy the natural order -- bringing pain, disease, hardship, lies, rage, hate, war and death. Most of all they enjoyed playing tricks on the people, fooling them into serving various spirit helpers instead of the Creator. Setko began to enslave the earth and its people.

This is why even today when a raven calls from high trees at evening it is taken as a bad omen.
