Light of the Dawn Mask

Long, long ago before the worlds were made or anyone can imagine Wonderful Doer lived in his Spirit Lodge built eternal on the highest place. A light brighter than many suns lit his house which was shared with his son we call the Transformer. Like the son of a mighty chief in our world, the Transformer was heir to inherit all the rights and privileges of his father and fully shared his power. He served as Spokesman for Wonderful Doer and always obeyed him.

Here is a mystery -- the lodge in which they dwelled was also a living being known as the Great Spirit. He filled every space between Wonderful Doer and the Transformer and brought them together as one. The Great Spirit carried out the will of Wonderful Doer and provided a place for the chief and his son to council together in unison.

In the center of the living lodge burned a blue and white fire that filled everything that was with something like light called glory. It was something like the light that we know, except much better. If you could see even a faintest ray of the glory light you would understand. Like burning logs pushed together in a fire ring, the flames of the glory light gleamed so brightly that the three beings were swallowed up together and shown as one light. Throughout eternity Wonderful Doer, the Transformer and the Great Spirit dwelled in unity, laughter and love. Their love was powerful medicine.

One day Wonderful Doer decided to make the worlds. He looked upon the emptiness that spread out before his lodge and saw that there was nothing at all below, above or in any direction. There were no other spirits or creatures of any kind. Then like a storyteller tells a story for the first time, he spoke the worlds into being.

First he created the light that we know. He reached out and cupped a tiny portion of the glory light in his hands, pressing it together. He then walked outside and released it, saying, “I want light to fill the emptiness.” And light spread out like daybreak everywhere. The light then was much brighter than the light that we see today, but not as bright as that which lit the heavenly lodge.

After creating light he made the sky worlds and the underworlds. Then like a carver carves a mask or totem pole, he fashioned our world by shaping the mountains and dry land, carefully preparing it for the people he planned to create.

His carving tool was his Word. When he thought of something that he wanted to make, he voiced a command and it appeared before him. He used the same power that animated his lodge and he sent the Transformer to carry out his work orders. In fact, everything that he made was made through the working of the Transformer. He created all the spirits, animals, people and everything that lives and does not live. The Transformer took a bit of glory light and put it into the heart of all things and, like a woman weaving an intricate basket, his hands took material from the earth and wove together the bodies of each creature that moves.

Wonderful Doer commanded that the Transformer fill the sky worlds with many spirit helpers to be his slaves. He made more spirit helpers than can be counted – as many as the stars that we see in the night sky. He made them out of his dreams. The spirit helpers danced around the lodge, like a cloud of sparks encircling a fire, singing and shouting about how grateful they were to be alive and to see the glory light. They loved to be slaves of such a great Chief who gave them many gifts and powers. The Transformer joined in the dance and the sound of drumbeats and singing rang out in all directions forever.
